"I remember:
We were there for 2 days before the event for sound and camera checks. Myself & The Shortlist borrowing equipment from the resident band of a club situated somewhere in the Grugahalle & then playing for the next two nights in the club. Waiting for the Rockpalast show.......waiting for hours & hours on the day of the show to go on stage (we were the last band appearing). Going on about 2 in the morning & not wanting to stop. I think they turned the video off for the last hour of our set.
I also remember we played The Beatles Sgt.Pepper for the first and only time and never playing it since. I must watch the video again to see how we did it. That's about it, the rest is just a haze of sex, drugs, rock & roll & happiness. Hope that does it for you Michael"

Du willst gern wissen,wie ich die Rockpalast-Nächte damals erlebt habe. Das war gar nicht so einfach bei mir im Tal der Ahnungslosen.Damals wurde ja ARD auch ganz frei und treffend mit "Ausser Raum Dresden" übersetzt. Das erste mal davon erfahren habe ich von einem Kollegen,der aus dem Raum Magdeburg nach Dresden kam. Er schwärmte vom Rory Gallagher-Konzert. Als ich 79/80 bei der Fahne war, habe ich im Radio das Ian Hunter-Konzert gehört. Einer meiner persönlichen Favoriten. Dabei kam es zu einem recht lustigen Erlebnis. Bei der Armee war ja Westradio und -fernsehen streng verboten. Steht da nicht plötzlich mitten in der Nacht so ein Trottel von Offizier in der Tür. Uns rutschte das Herz in die Hosentasche. Da es sich aber, wie damals in der Regel häufig in dieser Position, um einen geistigen Tiefflieger handelte, fiel ihm nur auf, das eigenartiger Weise in jedem Zimmer die selbe Musik lief.
Wieder in's zivile Leben entlassen, stand für mich fest, irgendwie die Rockpalast-Nächte auch live im Fernsehen erleben zu wollen. So nahm ich Kontakt zu entfernten Verwandten in Thüringen auf, die vollstes Verständniss für mein Problem hatten. Ab 81 bin ich halbjährlich von Sachsen nach Thüringen gezogen, wenn das Rockpalast-Wochenende anstand. Seit 83 hat es mich dann aber für immer nach Gera verschlagen, wo ich den Rockpalast bis zur letzten Nacht im Herbst 86 regelmäßig verfolgte. Für mich damals ein sehr trauriges Ereigniss.
Leider ist der Rockpalast heute für mich nicht mehr das, was er mal war, denn musikalisch ist scheinbar die Generation der 30 - 50-jährigen keine Zielgruppe der Programmacher mehr.Ich laß mich aber gern vom Gegenteil überzeugen. Vielleicht kann mein Wunsch nach Wiederholung der Konzerte von Ian Hunter, Patti Smith und ZZ Top irgendwann mal Wirklichkeit werden. Freuen würde ich mich auch über E-Mail's von Gleichgesinnten. Fuer mich waren die Rockpalastnaechte immer ein Muss. Viele meiner heutigen Favoriten (SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY, MITCH RYDER, ROGER CHAPMAN) habe ich damals zum ersten Mal (in der Glotze) erlebt. Der Hoehepunkt war fuer mich der Besuch der Rockpalastnacht im April 1982 (KINKS, VAN MORRISON) in der Grugahalle, wo wir mit einem Bus, der von der Stadtjugendpflege Seesen (meine Heimatstadt) organisiert wurde uns Richtung Westen begaben. Am Nachmittag vor der Rockpalastnacht waren wir noch im Moenchengladbacher Boekelbergstadion, wo die Borussia gegen den HSV spielte (und 1:3 (?) verlor; es war das Meisterschaftjahr des HSV). Fuer Wochen nach dem KINKS-Auftritt war ich immer noch ganz hingerissen von der Power, die sie damals ausstrahlten. Erschoepft aber begeistert waren wir gegen 8 Uhr dann wieder in der Heimat und um 10 Uhr hatte ich ein Handballspiel, an das ich mich aber nicht mehr weiter erinnern kann ...

I don't really have any strong memories of doing the TV show. They all tend to be alike, with cameras and lights. It was fun though, and I've always enjoyed playing in Germany. I hope to get back there someday. I like your web page very much. In the discography, you are missing my solo CD, "Back From Rio" 1991 Arista.

Herzlichen Dank für Euer Rockpalast Archiv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ich habe in der letzten Zeit oft darauf zugegriffen. Zwischen 1979 und 1985 hatte ich mit Freunden alle Rockpalast-Festivals im Fernsehen gesehen und die Konzerte auf Audio-Cassette mitgeschnitten. Inzwischen wird dieses Material jetzt von mir bearbeitet und auf CD kopiert. Eure Tracklisten leisten dabei ein unschätzbare Hilfe, ich würde die Titel so nicht alle bennen können. Eure Bilder und Querverweise zu anderen Pages geben mir dann noch das Material zur Gestaltung der CD-Labels und des Booklets.

A Night To Remember..... from Billy Csernits

......Detroit boys in Germany for the first time.....wow talk about culture shock! We flew into Germany 1 week before the night of the concert. Our record company thought it would be a nice touch if we could get to know your country and enjoy the sights. A very nice thought, but for a fast hard hitting Rock band.....it was WAY TOOOO MUCH IDLE TIME. We were used to "pull up... hit the stage.... and move on to the next city". So after a full week in a 5 Star hotel with great food and "carte blanc" for everything from room service to message' girls, ........by the time the night of the show came, we were a little on EDGE to say the least. To make things even more surreal, the record company said to us that afternoon at rehearsal..." well boys, we put out for you for the last week......now its your turn to put out for us....you had better not let us down" It was kind of like taking a girl home from the gig and the next morning she says you owe her $100.......are you getting the picture? So the band, our record execs and Rockpalast staff were waiting down in the lobby of the hotel, ready to take the tour bus over to the venue for the show......and no Mitch to be found. We call the room...no answer......we check the hotel bar...no Mitch...things are getting more tense by the minute....THIS THING HAS TO RUN on schedule.....there are millions of people watching Southside Johnny as we are waiting. Finally the elevator doors open and here he comes........ a half empty bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand and his hair looking like he had slept on it for 20 hours....all ratted up on one side...then sprayed with so much Hair Spray that it didn't move even as we went into the cool breeze of the night. I knew at that moment we were in for "A Night To Remember"
The night is pretty much documented other spots on this site...The fist fight backstage.....The drunken Pre-Interview with Alan Bangs...at which point 3 or 4 countries just pulled the plug on the broadcast. And I pretty much remember the set that night...... as just like most of our sets, and that was...when Mitch was "ON" there was always a spot where the music just took on a life of its own. It was not like this everynight..some nights were just plain BAD. But like anything that has very high levels there are always very low ones to go with it. But the nights were the real Mitch Ryder came to the party......were some high points of my life.
I am proud to have performed with one of the true Rock Legends of our time.
Thank you to all my German friends that I made over the years.......I miss seeing them more than anything else....... when I remember my days with Mitch.

Behind Blue Eyes, gespielt 1986 von Pete Townshend, gerade habe ich es auf Ihrer Homepage kurz gehört und mir eine Gänsehaut geholt. Wie so oft "landet" man im Internet irgendwie auf einer Seite und ich war eigentlich auf der Suche nach einem Text von Bryan Adams für meine Tochter (langsam nimmt sie etwas Vernunft an und kommt von den Spice Girls weg :-)
Ich habe lange Zeit damit verbracht, mir Ihre tollen Informationen anzusehen und anzuhören und bin begeistert! Vielen Dank für diese Seite!! Meine Jugend zog nochmal an mir vorbei :-))) Ich bin Jahrgang 64 und habe vor allem die ersten Rockpalast Nächte gesehen. Das war so etwa von 1977 bis 1982. Beim Durchforschen Ihrer Page mußte ich wieder an diese schöne Zeit denken, in der Techno noch ein Fremdwort war. "Man" hörte die Bay City Rollers, Abba oder aus Deutschland die Goombay (schreibt sich das so?) Dance Band. Ich aber wurde durch die erste Rocknacht unsterblicher Gallagher Fan ....... und im Freundeskreis - was Musik anging - ein "Freak" und Aussenseiter :-)) Damals mußte ich mir Kopfhörer an meinen alten Fernseher basteln, um meine Eltern mitten in der Nacht nicht um ihren verdienten Schlaf zu bringen. Heute kauft man sich einfach ne coole DVD ! Little Feat, die Kinks, Alvin Lee , die besoffene Patti Smith ...... und unvergeßlich - ZZ Top oder die Who im Morgengrauen eines anbrechenden Sonntags. Später dann das Kopfschütteln meiner Eltern, wenn ich so gegen Mittag aufstand. "Wie kann man sich wegen so einem Krach nur die Nacht um die Ohren schlagen!?" :-)
Ähnliches erzähle ich heute meiner 11 Jahre alten Tochter, wenn sie "unbedingt" die neue " The Dome" haben muß. Manches ändert sich eben nie.
Neulich fand ich in einem Geschäft zum "Nice Price" einen Livemitschnitt des Loreley Konzerts von Paul Rodgers (1995). Eine tolle CD und Rodgers "at his best", wie ich finde.

Ich höre jetzt lieber auf, in Nostalgie zu schwelgen, sonst nimmt die mail gar kein Ende mehr. Ich möchte Ihnen nochmal sagen, daß ich Ihre Seite großartig finde!! Machen Sie bitte weiter so. Ich werde regelmäßig zurückkehren :-))

I was proud to play drums with Jack Bruce & David Sancious on a ROCKPALAST show in 1983. This is a great site. There should be more like it. Best wishes to all!!!

Hi Graham,
almost 18 years have passed. At October 18th 1980 you played a tremendous gig with The Rumour at the WDR Rockpalast-Festival in the Gruguhalle, Essen, Germany. The show was broadcasted all over Europe. What memories do you have today considering this show? I was a small boy at this time, didn't had a TV-set, so I listen to you on the radio. After a break of some years, Rockpalast returned 1995 to the screen, producing and broadcasting new exciting live-shows and also showing the old stuff, that was recorded from '77 to '87. You can see that every sunday morning from nearly 1 to 6 o'clock (CET) at WDR III-TV (via satellite all over Europe). Unfortunately (for all the 'old' viewers and fans) the rights for broadcasting some of the old shows (your concert included) are no longer available for WDR, so the tapes have to stay in the libary. That's what Peter Rüchel, the director, told me and lots of other Rockpalast fans too. Do you see a chance of giving a permission to repeat the old show? Some 'early' Rockpalast artists already did, for example The Blues Band, Little Feat, Roger McGuinn, Jack Bruce....

The show you speak of was the last gig GP & the R. performed. Jack Bruce and the Police were also on the bill. It was a great crowd to play for and a pleasant way to end the allegiance between me and the band (Nicky Hopkins played keyboards that night - his only live show with us, to my memory). Ten thousand people who seemed entirely without prejudice and who appeared to dig each act equally thundered their applause through the echoing canyons of that cattle shed in the provincial little German town of Essen, and I believe we did one of our best shows ever.
By the way, Rockpalast shows, or at least the GP performances, including an earlier episode we did in '76/'77, are now in the hands of Studio Hamburg Fernseh Allianz (FA) and they, according to their quite recent correspondence with me, are looking to shop them around to TV networks. I hope you get to see the show again, and perhaps the '70's one too, but I can't imagine there will be any takers in TV land right now. There are people out there who have this stuff on video - people who follow this site. Maybe you can get a copy.
The image of you as a small boy, listening to me, crouched over a radio because you didn't have a TV, has made feel much more humble than is my usual nature. Thanks. Graham Parker.
